Biography

Call him what you will, Mike, Michael, Mickey Mouse, or even Emcee Mikey, he's always going to try his hardest in any format to grind you out with pure, unadulterated midrange value. Mike has experience in literature and creative writing, but never considered it a useful skill until he realized he could write about the best game in existence. He has since added it to the list of things he might do for a living someday, along with being an actor, a programmer, or president of the United States. He hopes that his love for Magic will be a part of his career no matter what he decides to do.

Magic the Gathering and Sociology: Blue

Continuing my series from last week, today we’re going to dive into the intellectually-developed world of Blue and their approach to social problems. Given Blue’s focus on self-improvement and knowledge, I think they’d be quite invested in the education system- Blue wants a society of free-thinking individuals. As with last week, I’m going to start …

Legacy Cube Draft- Mike Jardine

I play a fairly standard legacy cube draft, jumping from archetype to archetype before settling in the worst one.

Magic the Gathering and Sociology: White

I love to learn. It’s something central to my identity. They say you can’t learn via osmosis, but sometimes it really seems like I can- aside from the fact that osmosis is limited to transfer of water, of course! This part of me can have its downsides, of course. Sometimes, I sit in class and …

Worldwake Standard Throwback League Video

I go into a Standard Gauntlet on MODO hoping for Jund and I roll the oppressive Caw-Blade itself. Rest In Peace me.

I also munch on a tasty carrot.

Amonkhet 2-Headed Giant Prerelease

I had a pretty busy weekend, but I was going to try as hard as I could to attend a Prerelease somewhere. Halfway through the week I had made plans with some friends to go camping Friday night, which ruled out a midnight event. I wanted to attend a single player event, but as I …

A Standard Metagame With Amonkhet

Spoiler season is, as they say, in full swing and I’ve already seen enough to believe Amonkhet will revitalize the Standard meta. Between powerful removal with cycling and aggressive, efficient red spells, the potential archetypes coming about should safely check 4c Saheeli and keep other planeswalker decks down. Since I’m such a fiend for Jund …

Commander: Yidris, Green Grixis Guy

Commander is a large facet of MTGCasualPlay. As my favorite casual format, I relish the opportunity to bring a new commander to each table. Occasionally I’ll enjoy a particular deck so much I run it back a few times over just for fun. The last time I did this was with a Surrak deck that …

A First Look at Amonkhet

Hey guys! The last few weeks have been pretty busy with stuff like work and “Real-Life” Magic, but I saw the news from Wizards giving us an early look at Amonkhet with our first (official) spoiler cards. In case you haven’t seen it yet, the link is here. I’ll go ahead and give you a …

Brews Clues- A Casual Investigation

While the Investigate mechanic hasn’t made much of an influence on competitive play (outside a very Tenacious Hunter), there are a lot of crazy things you can do with them in casual settings. A favorite card of mine, [card]Ashnod’s Altar[/card], happens to synergize greatly with [card]Ulvenwald Mysteries[/card]. That gets me thinking. Can we make a …
